Your Word Lights My Path
Natasha Lara Hughes

Your Word Lights My Path is a sequence of photos, embodying both a supernatural
stillness and a fleeting movement of an almost otherworldly and yet intimate journey
through a snow covered mountainscape. Jagged edges are softened in a hushed void,
by the sublime blanketing of a blizzard; an abyss of white stretching endlessly alludes
to a silence and vastness. The meditative stillness is captured in a fleeting moment
where the spiritual and the intangible combine as if one is voyaging through a dream.
Contrasting tones of shadows interact with luminosity hovering over barely visible
landscapes. An overwhelming sense of solitude and seclusion seem to be all that
remains. However, The title Your Word Lights My Path, suggests an ambiguity that
hope is ever present.
These photographs embody an empty wilderness; they are meditations on solitude, the
supernatural vastness of nature, and the ephemeral traces now concealed beneath the
snow. They invite us to observe this haunting path, to lose ourselves in the ghostly
hush, and to embrace the exquisite melancholy of the infinite unknown, yet from an
almost cinematic safety. The viewer is not immersed, but is slightly distanced from
the scene. Here, the notion that modern technology has abstracted us from a direct
relationship with nature, places us in a safe distance, like a spectator in a movie,
rather than fully being in the existential experience.
The mountains dissolve softly into mist and memory. The snow, smooth and
unbroken, suggests both purity and oblivion—a paradox of serenity and estrangement.
This resonates with Wittgenstein’s idea that things we experience and ‘know’ evade
linguistic exactitude and therefore, exist in the realm of the indefinable.
Moreover, this concept also alludes to Heidegger’s notion of the uncanny where the
familiar and the strange blur, provoking an unsettling awareness of ones own being in
the world. There is an attempt to capture a lamenting beauty, an uncanny tranquillity
that lingers like a half-remembered dream. Devoid of human inhabitancy, the viewer
has the opportunity to observe the sense of being the last living soul on the planet.
Your Word; in the title, however, symbolises a form of divine or existential
communication that offers a sense of direction - however ambiguous - that carries
the individual forward in their journey and ‘lights a path’ through the unknown.
